Secret Spot Wines
Gon§alo Sousa Lopes and Rui Cunha started Secret Spot wines in the Douro region of Portugal in 2004. Agriculture and viticulture specialist, Gon§alo is responsible for discovering new plots to increase the complexity of our wines. Winemaking is the responsibility Rui, were his passion in handcrafting wines that breath the Terroir in which the grapes grow. The schist soil characterizes the Douro region and walking in the vineyards you can really discover that the color of the stone changes (from pale silver, dark brown to intense blue) the percentage of stone varies from nearly 100% to merely 20% and the clay that works as a nutrient and water reservoir changes every 100 meters. Adding in the different altitudes, starting at 100m and extending just over 900m and imagining all the possible different expositions that a hilly vineyard country offers, you’ll find yourself sharing a giant puzzle with nature where your winemaking imagination is the limit. With our focus mainly on old vineyards (50yrs to 90yrs) that are the true essence of this noble wine region, most vineyards are always field blends where you can find over 15 different grape varieties. High density plantings, very low yields and 100% human hand work. Working closely with the grape growers Gon§alo insists on recovering the ancient vineyard practices and is slowly applying biological methods. Following the same principles applied in the vineyards, our cellar was rebuilt but we maintained the old granite lagares, the use of gravity and the old basket presses. The grapes are hand harvested into small boxes and the sorted before the transformation begins.
