There’s 102 dozen produced from grapes grown on 27 year old vines by the Quigley Family, Woodshill, Ashton, which is adjacent to Ashton Hills Vineyard. “Wild yeast, no added acid, enzymes or fining agents. Post MLF SO2 add only. Pressed to 5-7 year old French oak barriques for 9 months. Open fermented 50% whole bunch. Remaining fruit is gently de-stemmed as whole berries over the top. Hand plunged for 21 days.”
Needs a bit of air, so give it a splash in the decanter first if drinking young. Red fruits, plum, chamomile and black tea, a little crushed ant and chocolate wrapper. It’s deep and quite powerful, with spicy red fruits and plum, a savoury earth, dried herb and beetroot flavour, clean acid to balance and a coating of fine powdery tannin. Pretty good length with it. A wine of intrigue and personality. Like this.
