New Release – Woodlands Clémentine Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot & Malbec 2016

“2016 Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot-Petit Verdot-Malbec ‘Clémentine’

‘Clémentine’ is sourced entirely from the Woodlands Brook Vineyard, part of Woodlands since 2008.It is also on this property that Andrew and Marie fell in love, leading to their daughter ‘Clémentine’ .When we purchased Woodlands Brook we were excited by the site – with established Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot facing north west on free-draining Wilyabrup soils. The vineyard is also densely planted, with rows a mere 2 metres from each other, providing a vine density roughly double that of the Woodlands vineyard. We planted Cabernet Sauvignon on the south western border of the property in 2009. The soil in this plot contains a higher level of gravel and clay – perfect for powerful Cabernet Sauvignon.

The Cabernet Sauvignon vines have never been irrigated – leading too much slower vine development, but finer fruit. This wine was hand-picked in small batches from mid-March to April.

Following harvest, the fruit was destemmed, hand sorted berry by berry, then crushed and fermented in small stainless steel fermenters. Following fermentation,  the Cabernet Sauvignon portions remained on skins for 28 days for added complexity and tannin integration. Once fermentation was complete this wine was transferred into French barrels where it remained for 18 months. 40% of the barrels were new, the remainder one year old. Our 2016 ‘Clémentine is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 14% Petit Verdot and 16% Malbec. The nose displays a ripe and powerful array of dark berry fruits, five spice, and toasty French oak notes. The pallet mirrors the nose, with a polish and density that marks all fruit from Woodlands Brook.

We’re very proud of this wine, and look forward to seeing the wine style grow and mature just as little Clémentine does” _
