HUON HOOKE – Reviews Champagne Deutz

Champagne Deutz Brut Classic NV – 4 STARS

90 Candied fruits, meringue, attractive wine with a clean, dry and almost slightly firm finish which belies its 9.5 grams/litre dosage. Citrus flavours. Good balance, length and style – a serious NV. (Base vintage 2012. Disgorged January 2016. One-third of each of the 3 main grape varieties. About 40% reserve wine.) 24/10/2017

Champagne Deutz Brut Vintage 2010 – 4.5 STARS

93 Medium straw colour with a moderately complex, toast and straw, savoury-developed bouquet. The wine is rich and deep and is a big step up in depth and complexity from the Brut Classic. (Disgorged April 2016. 75% pinot noir, 20% chardonnay) 24/10/2017

Champagne Deutz Cuvee William Deutz Vintage 2006 – 5 STARS

98 This is a far better bottle than the one I sampled a few weeks ago. Medium to full yellow colour; rich, bready bouquet of great complexity and charm. Excellent palate intensity; crisp and dry, savoury and refined, powerful, long and full bodied. A great Champagne. (66% pinot noir, 29% chardonnay, 5% meunier) 13/12/2017

Champagne Deutz Brut Rose NV Gift Box – 4 STARS

92 Light to medium youthful salmon-pink colour, with rose petal, pot-pourri, and quince paste aromas. The wine is full and rich in the mouth with a trace of sweetness, and generosity rather than finesse. Good wine and very accessible. (Base vintage 2012. Disgorged February 2016. 90% pinot noir, 10% chardonnay) 24/10/2017

Champagne Deutz Brut Vintage Rose 2010 – 5 STARS

96 Light to mid-salmon-pink turning to a more onion-skin colour with age. The bouquet is very savoury, straw-like and has hints of meringue and smoked charcuterie. The palate is more intense and finer than the NV rosé, with lovely complexity of flavours and very good length. The finish is clean and dry and incisive. Very deep flavour and long carry. A superb rosé. On today’s tasting, this is the value buy of the range. (Disgorged June 2015. Pinot noir 78% , chardonnay 22% ) 24/10/2017

Champagne Deutz Amour de Deutz Rosé Vintage 2007 – 5 STARS

97 Light to mid-salmon-pink, tending towards an onion-skin shade. The bouquet is marvellously deep and complex, with an extra dimension, which if I didn’t know better I’d guess was barrel fermentation. Strawberry, charcuterie, quince paste and so much more. The palate is very intense and profound, with amazing penetration and persistence. A rich wine with a warming, generous, glowing aftertaste. Very impressive. Power with elegance. (Disgorged November 2015. Pinot noir 60%, chardonnay 40%) 24/10/201

Champagne Deutz Blanc de Blancs Vintage 2009 – 5 STARS

95 Bright, light to mid-yellow colour, with an intense and charming bouquet which shows lemon, citrus and meringue aromas, hints of almond and the lightest touch of toastiness. Fine and dry, long and pure in the mouth. A lovely wine. (Disgorged December 2015) 24/10/2017

Champagne Deutz Amour de Deutz Blanc de Blancs Chardonnay 2007 – 5 STARS

97 Mid-yellow colour with a tint of straw, the bouquet more toasty than the regular Blanc de Blancs and very complex, with liberal toast and grilled almond nuances, the palate more along the lemon and grapefruit citrus spectrum. Wonderful acidity and long, driving, penetrative flavours on the palate and finish. A magnificent wine. (Avize 51%, Le Mesnil sur Oger 44%, Villers Marmery 5%. Disgorged March 2016) 24/10/2017 Drink 2017 to 2023
