Contrarian Shiraz

For 2014 the grape site for ‘The Contrarian’ is again Marananga on the Western slopes of the Barossa Valley. Nigel Blieschke and his family have a small vineyard of (Coonawarra clone) Shiraz which he farms sustainably using organic principles. Fermentation was cool and long with the use of some whole bunches. Foot crushing and pigeage extended the contact time with grape skins and stems which has built more structure and tannin weight. 12 months maturation in 50% new French Demi-Muid (600L) barrels and bottled unfined and unfiltered under stelvin capsule.

Black with purple hues. Aromas of blue and red fruits, black pepper, tea, sherbert, liquorice and anise. Liquid black cherries, black jelly beans, some tar and sweet, smoky tea leaf tannins. Great with duck or caramelised pork. Decant for at least one hour. Drink 2015-2025.
